TAMULink-WPA for Windows Mobile 5/6

TAMULink-WPA is a new wireless network that allows for greater flexibility and security when accessing the campus wireless network. WPA utilizes the 802.1x wireless technology. This document will detail how to configure Windows Mobile 5/6 to connect to this network.

Configuring the WPA Connection

Note: If you are using Windows Mobile 5, skip to the bottom section called Troubleshooting, and follow the instructions there first.

  1. Navigate to Settings, and then Connections, and click on 'Wi-Fi.'

  1. The first time you connect, Windows should ask you for a username and password. Type in your NetID and NetID password into the appropriate boxes. Make sure your NetID is typed in using lower-case letters.

  1. It might take about 30 seconds, but the device should connect.
  1. If you want to change your saved password in the future, you can do so by going to the Wi-Fi tab, clicking on the profile, and choosing 'Remove Settings.' This will erase all the settings (including your NetID and password), so you will have to follow these instructions again. You do not have to reinstall the security certificate.

Troubleshooting

Windows Mobile 5

  1. Windows Mobile 5 users will experience difficulties with connecting to Tamulink-WPA, since the required security certificate is not included in the Root Certificate Store for the operating system. You can download it here
  2. Save the file to your computer. Using ActiveSync or your Storage Card, transfer the file to your WM5 device; the location isn't important. Once this is done, try to open the certificate. It should install to the Root Certificate store.
  3. Some SmartPhones do not have the proper permissions to install the certificate. While this varies by device, there is a generic Microsoft utility that might help you install it.
  4. After the certificate installs, follow the directions at the top of the page to configure the connection.

Windows Mobile 5/6 not connecting

  1. If you connected to tamulink-wpa using the previous certificate system (tamu.cer), you might need to delete it from the certificate store.
  2. Go to Start -> Settings -> System tab -> Certificates -> Root tab.
  3. Find the one called tamu.cer and select it. An option should come up so you can delete it. Do this and try to re-connect.
